88 kVA Blackwell Diesel Generator for Midlands Council Data Centre

An 88 kVA Blackwell diesel generator with a Baudouin engine and Stamford alternator now supports a Midlands council disaster recovery data centre.

Project overview

A Midlands-based local authority needed to strengthen the electrical resilience of its disaster recovery data centre. Blackwell Generators supplied a new 88 kVA diesel generator engineered to support essential digital infrastructure if the normal mains supply is interrupted.

The generator set combines a Baudouin industrial diesel engine with a Stamford brushless alternator. FW Power Generators worked with the council's facilities and infrastructure teams on system sizing, site integration, commissioning and testing.

The critical-power challenge

A council disaster recovery facility protects the systems required to maintain public services during an IT incident, utility failure or disruption at the primary site. Its standby power system therefore needs to start reliably, accept the required electrical load and deliver stable power for sensitive equipment.

The council required a durable backup generator that could integrate with the existing electrical infrastructure while supporting long-term maintainability and operational readiness.

  • Citizen service portals and public-facing systems
  • Finance, payroll, planning and housing databases
  • Emergency coordination and communications platforms
  • Secure backups, servers and network equipment

The 88 kVA Blackwell diesel generator solution

The selected solution was a brand-new 88 kVA Blackwell enclosed diesel generator for standby duty. The rating was matched to the site's assessed load requirements so the data-centre infrastructure could be supported without unnecessarily oversizing the installation.

Its enclosed construction protects the generator equipment at the installation location and provides accessible service points for planned inspection and maintenance.

  • Rated output: 88 kVA
  • Generator brand: Blackwell Generators
  • Engine: Baudouin industrial diesel engine
  • Alternator: Stamford brushless alternator
  • Application: standby power for a disaster recovery data centre

Why a Baudouin engine and Stamford alternator were selected

Baudouin engines are established in industrial power-generation applications and provide the robust diesel platform needed for a critical standby generator. Their practical serviceability and load-acceptance characteristics made the engine a strong fit for the council's resilience requirements.

The Stamford brushless alternator was specified to support dependable voltage regulation and consistent electrical output as data-centre loads change. For servers, networking equipment and supporting systems, power quality matters alongside the availability of backup power.

Installation, integration and commissioning

FW Power Generators coordinated with the council's project teams to help confirm the generator size, plan its position and integrate the new set with the site's electrical arrangements. The installation was then tested and commissioned to verify correct operation before handover.

This joined-up approach gave the council a complete critical-power solution: a new Blackwell generator supported by experienced UK generator engineers and an ongoing route for servicing and technical assistance.

The outcome

The completed 88 kVA generator installation strengthens the council's business-continuity and disaster-recovery capability. Essential data-centre systems now have a dedicated standby power source for use during a loss of mains electricity.

  • Improved resilience for mission-critical council infrastructure
  • Reduced operational risk during power interruptions
  • Stable standby power for sensitive IT and communications equipment
  • A maintainable generator package built around recognised components
  • Greater confidence in continuity of public services

Backup generators for public-sector data centres

Local authorities, healthcare organisations and other public-sector operators depend on secure digital services around the clock. A correctly sized data-centre backup generator is a core part of a wider resilience plan that should also cover fuel autonomy, electrical protection, transfer arrangements, routine servicing and regular operational testing.

Blackwell supplies diesel generators for data centres, communications rooms, public buildings and other critical facilities. Each project can be specified around the required kVA output, load profile, site conditions, acoustic needs and planned standby duty.
