Blackwell Generators

NHS & healthcare estates

Healthcare critical backup power.

Diesel generators for hospitals, NHS facilities and healthcare premises, with specification support, installation and ongoing care from Blackwell Generators.

Planning a new standby power system or replacing ageing equipment? We work with estates teams, consultants and contractors to review generator requirements and prepare a clear project quotation.

Hospital backup generators UK

A generator proposal built around your healthcare estate.

Healthcare power resilience depends on the whole electrical system. Blackwell supplies new diesel generator sets and supports buyers in defining the equipment, controls and engineering services required for their project. We welcome enquiries for NHS hospitals, community healthcare facilities, private hospitals, clinics and care settings.

NHS estates and capital projects

Share your tender specification, electrical drawings and programme. We can review the generator supply scope with your estates team or appointed contractor and identify the information needed for a proposal.

Replacement standby generators

Plan replacement equipment around existing switchgear, access and service requirements. Agree changeover arrangements and continuity of essential supplies with the site's responsible team before works begin.

Clinics and community healthcare

Match backup power to the actual premises and essential systems. Smaller facilities still need a clear assessment of the loads, interruption limits and maintenance arrangements.

Explore our Blackwell diesel generator range, including Perkins, Cummins, Baudouin and Doosan engine options. The selected model and operating rating must be assessed against your healthcare specification.

Healthcare generator specification

Define the critical power requirements before choosing the set.

01

Essential loads and clinical priorities

Share the electrical load schedule and the circuits that require backup power. Your appointed healthcare design team should define permissible interruptions, clinical priorities and the supply arrangements for each area.

02

Duty rating and load acceptance

Confirm the required kW and kVA, operating duty, ambient conditions and load steps. Review starting demand from motors and building services as well as UPS input and recharge characteristics.

03

ATS, switchgear and monitoring

Agree automatic transfer, start signals, protection and alarm interfaces. For multiple sets, review synchronisation, load sharing and the wider redundancy design with the electrical consultant.

04

Fuel storage and operating duration

Define fuel autonomy, tank arrangements, access for replenishment and inspection requirements. A refuelling and maintenance plan is part of preparing for a prolonged loss of mains power.

05

Acoustics, exhaust and access

Review plant location, ventilation, exhaust routing, noise requirements and safe maintenance access. Delivery and lifting arrangements need to reflect the constraints of an operational healthcare site.

06

Commissioning and planned testing

Agree acceptance tests, witness requirements and handover documents before ordering. Coordinate any transfer tests with the estates team so affected services and operational risks are understood.

HTM 06-01 and healthcare electrical services

NHS England publishes HTM 06-01 guidance for electrical services supply and distribution in healthcare premises. Send us the applicable project requirements so the proposed generator package can be reviewed against them. The final installation, testing and acceptance criteria need to be agreed with the responsible healthcare project team.

A standard generator datasheet is only one part of that assessment. We do not treat every Blackwell model as automatically suitable for every hospital application.

FW Power NHS experience

550 kVA

Bespoke generator contract

FW Power's bespoke 550 kVA NHS generator contract.

FW Power Generators, the company behind Blackwell, has published a case study about securing a major NHS contract for a bespoke 550 kVA generator. Read the original article for the project details and the scope described by FW Power.

For your healthcare project, we can discuss a Blackwell generator proposal with support from the wider FW Power team, based on your own equipment and site requirements.

Healthcare generator servicing and maintenance.

The generator needs ongoing attention throughout its working life. Through FW Power, we offer planned servicing, maintenance contracts, load bank testing and fault-finding support. Set the maintenance scope around the equipment, manufacturer recommendations and the healthcare site's operating procedures.

Explore generator maintenance and services

Agree the test plan and service scope.

  • Engine, battery, charger and cooling-system checks
  • Fuel condition and starting-system inspections
  • Controller, alarm and transfer-system checks as agreed
  • Load bank testing and recorded performance results
  • Commissioning records and remedial-work recommendations

Testing on an operational healthcare site must be coordinated with the estates team. Visit frequency, fault-response availability and any specialist testing are confirmed in the agreed scope.

NHS & hospital generator enquiries

Healthcare backup power FAQs.

Can Blackwell supply backup generators for NHS projects?

We welcome generator enquiries from NHS trusts, estates teams, consultants and principal contractors. Send your specification, load schedule and procurement requirements so we can review a Blackwell generator proposal. FW Power Generators, which owns and distributes Blackwell, has a published case study about securing an NHS contract for a bespoke 550 kVA generator.

What size generator does a hospital need?

There is no universal hospital generator size. The design must identify essential loads, motor starting and load steps, UPS recharge demand, cooling, site conditions and future capacity. The healthcare project's appointed electrical designers should establish the resilience and clinical requirements before a generator is selected.

Does a hospital generator provide an uninterrupted supply?

A standby generator needs time to start and accept load. Loads that cannot tolerate that interruption require an appropriately designed UPS or other suitable power arrangement. The generator, UPS and transfer equipment must be coordinated against the needs of the connected clinical and supporting systems.

What is HTM 06-01 and how does it affect generator selection?

NHS England's Health Technical Memorandum 06-01 provides guidance on electrical services supply and distribution in healthcare premises. Share the applicable specification and acceptance criteria with us for review. Generator purchase alone does not demonstrate that the complete installation meets the project's healthcare requirements.

Can you quote for an HTM 06-01 generator specification?

Send the specification for a technical review. Generator duty, load acceptance, controls, fuel arrangements, installation and testing requirements need to be assessed for the proposed set and site. Any proposed clarification or deviation should be identified and agreed with the project's responsible team before an order is placed.

Can you replace an existing healthcare standby generator?

We can discuss replacement supply and installation support. Provide the existing generator details, drawings, photographs and site access information. The project team must agree how essential supplies will be maintained during the works, including temporary power or phased changeover where required.

Do you offer healthcare generator maintenance and load bank testing?

Through FW Power Generators, we offer planned servicing, maintenance contracts, load bank testing, commissioning and fault-finding support. The scope, visit frequency, test method and response arrangements are agreed around the equipment and the healthcare site's operating requirements.

How much does an NHS or hospital generator cost?

The cost depends on output, duty rating, engine and alternator, enclosure, acoustic requirements, fuel storage, controls, delivery, installation and testing. We prepare quotations against an agreed scope, with availability and lead time confirmed for the proposed equipment.
