Prime power vs standby power: what the kVA rating means.

The same generator model can carry different published ratings because each rating describes a different operating duty. Choose by application, not by the largest number on the sheet.

Emergency standby power (ESP)

Standby rating applies when a generator supplies a variable electrical load during failure of a reliable normal source. It is intended for emergency operation within the engine manufacturer’s annual-hour limits. No overload capability is available at the standby rating. This is the familiar duty for offices, homes, farms, hospitals and data facilities with a dependable mains connection.

Prime power (PRP)

Prime rating applies when the generator supplies a variable load for an extended number of hours, subject to the manufacturer’s permitted average load and maintenance conditions. It is relevant to construction, rental, remote sites and locations where the generator is the principal source. Some prime ratings permit a defined overload for limited periods; the applicable engine datasheet and ISO classification control.

Why standby kVA is higher

Emergency duty is short and intermittent compared with prime operation, so manufacturers permit a higher output for that restricted use. Running a generator continuously at its standby number can overload the engine, reduce life and breach warranty conditions. A 500 kVA standby model may be approximately 450 kVA at prime duty, but the exact relationship varies by engine and alternator.

Rating alone does not complete the sizing

The selected set must also accommodate power factor, motor starting, block loading, harmonics, UPS and variable-speed drives, ambient temperature, altitude and future expansion. Alternator sizing may be driven by transient performance even when the engine has sufficient steady-state kW.

kVA, kW and power factor

kW describes real power used to perform work; kVA describes apparent power carried by the electrical system. They are related by power factor: kW = kVA × power factor. Many three-phase generator sheets publish ratings at 0.8 power factor, so 100 kVA corresponds to 80 kW. Single-phase and particular applications may use a different basis—check the datasheet.

Continuous and data-centre ratings

Some manufacturers also publish continuous, base-load or data-centre power ratings. These have distinct load and operating definitions and should not be assumed from the prime value. Ask for a duty-specific selection when the set will operate continuously, in parallel with the grid, or under a recognised data-centre standard.

Which rating should you quote?

  • Reliable utility supply with occasional outages: assess emergency standby power.
  • Generator is the main supply for variable loads: assess prime power.
  • Fixed load for unlimited hours: request a continuous-duty assessment.
  • Multiple sets, grid parallel or critical data application: specify the exact operating mode and redundancy philosophy.
